A personalised cancer vaccine just cleared Phase 3

Moderna and Merck's intismeran autogene is the first personalised mRNA cancer therapy to get through a Phase 3 trial. Across 1,137 people with melanoma, the 758 who received it alongside surgery and the immunotherapy pembrolizumab saw their risk of recurrence or death fall by 49%, and the risk of the cancer spreading to distant organs fall by 59%. The vaccine is built from each patient's own tumour, which is why it took this long to prove.

The Roman telescope launches this weekend

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Observatory goes up from Kennedy Space Center nine months ahead of schedule. Its mirror matches Hubble's 2.4 metres, but a 300-megapixel infrared camera gives it a field of view 100 times wider — data collected up to 1,000 times faster. Over five years it should image around a billion galaxies and find roughly 100,000 exoplanets, with every exposure released to the whole scientific community 24 hours later.

They may have found a particle made of pure force

A glueball is a particle built from gluons alone — no quarks at all — and physicists have hunted one for decades. The BESIII collaboration in Beijing now reports that the X(2370) particle looks dominated by glueball content, based on roughly 10 billion J/psi decays collected over 13 years. Outside experts call the evidence persuasive rather than closed, which is about as excited as particle physicists get in public.

India's lions are up 70% in a decade

Asiatic lions in Gujarat's Greater Gir Landscape went from 523 in 2015 to 891, with their range expanding from about 30,000 to nearly 35,000 square kilometres across 11 districts. In the 1980s there were 60 to 80 animals left. The recovery came from rebuilding the prey — nilgai, sambar, spotted deer, wild pigs — and 17 lions have now recolonised Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, where they vanished in the 19th century.

The first live AI-assisted brain surgery saved a man’s sight

Rhys Hibbert, 48, had a non-cancerous pituitary tumour removed while an AI system from UCL's Hawkes Institute — trained on hundreds of scans and surgical videos — flagged critical anatomy, instruments and risky zones near the carotid arteries and optic nerves in real time. Human surgeons performed and controlled the whole operation. He woke saying he could see the room clearly and was walking unaided within a week.

A test you do at home cut colorectal cancer deaths by 43%

Fourteen years of follow-up on Sweden's Stockholm-Gotland screening programme, covering 376,511 people offered an at-home stool test. Everyone invited to screen had 26% lower colorectal cancer mortality; the people who actually posted their sample back had 43% lower mortality. This is real population data, not a lab model — the main gap is that only about two-thirds of those invited took part.

JWST found a "black hole star" from the early universe

MoM-BH*-1 pairs an active black hole of roughly 100,000 solar masses with a dense envelope of nearly pure hydrogen and helium about the size of our solar system. It dates to a few hundred million years after the Big Bang and pours out far more energy than any star could produce. Researchers think it may be a genuinely new class of object — and the explanation for JWST’s puzzling "little red dots".

Africa's largest solar-plus-storage plant switched on

The Hydra Project in South Africa's Northern Cape pairs 216 MW of solar with 500 MWh of batteries — the biggest hybrid renewable facility on the continent. It produces about 400 GWh a year and, crucially, delivers 75 MW of continuous renewable power from 5am to 9:30pm under a 20-year agreement. That's roughly 200,000 households on power that doesn't stop at sunset.

They went hunting one particle and found two others

The GlueX collaboration at Jefferson Lab fired high-energy photons at liquid hydrogen looking for the Y(2175) state, and turned up two structures nobody had seen. Y(2240) showed up near 2.24 GeV at 5-sigma significance, X(1830) near 1.82 GeV at 3-sigma. Both may involve strange quarks and excited gluons, and could help sort out the messy 'XYZ' states that refuse to fit the standard quark model.

An 11,000-year-old statue of someone riding a leopard

Archaeologists at Karahan Tepe in Turkey, about 27 miles east of Göbekli Tepe, uncovered a 70-centimetre carved figure seated on a leopard’s back, on a platform beside a three-metre stone-floored structure. Turkey’s culture minister called it "a composite statue with a style unlike anything seen before". The same site has also produced the inverse: a human carrying a leopard.

Immune cells, supercharged to get inside solid tumours

Solid tumours are hard for immune cells to penetrate, which is why so much cell therapy only works on blood cancers. Stanford researchers engineered natural killer cells that get in, and slowed melanoma and head-and-neck tumour growth in mice. One dose alongside the antibody drug cetuximab beat either treatment alone over a month. Still mouse work — a Phase I human trial is being prepared, pending FDA sign-off.

Octopus brains grow 100-fold. Here may be why.

Researchers found a structural break in octopus ribosomal RNA that appears in no other animal — and only in the clever shallow-water octopuses, not their deep-sea Dumbo relatives. Their ribosomes turn out to be far pickier about which transfer RNAs they accept than squid or human ones, which may make protein-building unusually accurate. An octopus brain grows about 100-fold over its life. A human brain manages roughly four.

Betelgeuse had a secret companion the whole time

Astronomers used the SPHERE instrument on the Very Large Telescope in Chile to directly image Betelgeuse B, ending a roughly century-long search for the companion hiding in the red supergiant's glare. It weighs an estimated 2 to 3 solar masses, notably more than the single solar mass predicted. It may also explain why Betelgeuse's brightness keeps wandering. Purple fabric that dumps your body heat into space

A cloth built from a metal-organic framework, zinc oxide nanoparticles and polyurethane fibres radiates heat straight through the atmosphere’s 8-13 micrometre window — effectively into outer space. Tested in direct sun in Zhengzhou, it ran 4.2°C cooler than white cotton and 6.2°C cooler than ordinary purple cotton. It is water-repellent, breathable, and still worked after 50 washes. The purple is just what that chemistry looks like.

Someone measured a nuclear reactor’s ghostly afterglow

The Double Chooz collaboration detected antineutrinos streaming from a nuclear reactor that had been switched off — a first. Over 17.2 days at the Chooz plant in northern France, a detector 400 metres from the cores holding more than 30 cubic metres of liquid scintillator caught about 100 antineutrino events from residual radioactivity in the cores and spent-fuel pools, closely matching simulations.

One blood test, many cancers, and where they started

UCLA's MethylScan reads DNA methylation patterns to spot multiple cancer types and point to the tissue they came from. It caught 63% of cancers across all stages and 55% of early-stage ones at 98% specificity, reaching nearly 80% for liver cancer in high-risk patients. It needs only about 5 GB of sequencing, projecting under $20 a sample. Larger prospective trials are still needed before it screens anyone for real.

A 49-millimetre fossil from Texas, named Chosha praecursor, came with the standard six walking legs plus nine extra pairs of paddle-like limbs along its abdomen. The paddles point to a semi-aquatic life, and the authors argue that losing those abdominal limbs was a key innovation in the move onto land — which is why every insect you have ever met has settled on six.

Light-powered robots smaller than a bacterium

Würzburg researchers built nanorobots under a micrometre across — about 50 times thinner than a human hair — pushed along by photon recoil and steered by nanoscale antenna wires that align with the light’s polarisation. Four stars, and a pattern of eclipses nobody has seen

TIC 433545934 is a '2+2' system — two binary pairs circling each other — and it is the first confirmed case where one pair eclipses both members of the other. Pair A's stars orbit every 2 days, Pair B's every 1.4 days, and the two pairs orbit each other every 224.5 days, making it the fifth most compact system of its kind known. The whole arrangement is about 580 million years old.

An invisibility coat for transplanted insulin cells

After eight years of work, Penn State researchers built a 20-micrometre hydrogel coating that mimics the layer around an egg cell — hiding transplanted insulin-producing cells from immune attack while still letting insulin out. Coated cells held diabetic mice at healthy blood sugar for more than 100 days with no immunosuppressive drugs at all. Uncoated cells lasted a week or less. Mice for now; humans are the goal.

Dolphins invented a new way to fish and taught it on

Bottlenose dolphins off Hervey Bay in Queensland were filmed 'shelling' — chasing fish into big empty shells, lifting them to the surface and shaking the prey out. It is the first record of the behaviour on Australia's east coast; it was known only from Shark Bay, on the opposite side of the continent. Researchers watched a calf watch its mother do it, then pick up a shell minutes later and hold it exactly the same way.

ATLAS spotted a brand-new composite particle

The ATLAS collaboration at the LHC made the first observation of the Bc*+ meson, an excited state built from a charm quark and a bottom antiquark. They measured its mass difference from the ordinary Bc+ at 64.5 ± 1.4 MeV, catching the decay photon by its conversion into electron-positron pairs down to momenta of 100 MeV. That brings the count of new hadrons discovered at the LHC to 84.

At Chleby in Central Bohemia, archaeologists uncovered a 6,500-year-old circular enclosure with a ditch 230 metres across and 8 feet deep, ringed by 12 entrances that once held wooden posts and were decorated with bull skulls and horns. The entrances line up with solstice sunrises and sunsets — and with the moon’s most extreme horizon position in its 18.6-year cycle.

Empty space may have just bent light, as predicted

Watching the magnetar 1E 1547.0-5408 with the Parkes radio telescope and NASA’s IXPE and NICER X-ray telescopes, researchers found extremely high X-ray polarisation aligned with the star’s magnetic field. That is the signature of vacuum birefringence — a quantum effect Heisenberg predicted almost 90 years ago — in a field over 100 million times stronger than anything we can make. More observations are needed to rule out alternatives.

Glacier mice are real and they move in herds

They are ovoid balls of moss that form around grit on glacial ice and creep along at centimetres a day — together, as a herd, in a direction that slope and wind cannot explain. A study tagged them with wire and glass beads and tracked them for 54 days on Iceland’s Falljökull glacier. An individual glacier mouse can live about six years, rotating continuously so the moss on every side stays alive.

The earliest galaxies are four times heavier than we thought

Combining JWST spectra with ground-based Very Large Telescope data, researchers re-weighed nine massive, mature galaxies from the early universe and found far more faint low-mass stars hiding inside them. Some are three to four times more massive than previously estimated — including one that formed less than 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. Current models of galaxy formation cannot yet explain populations that big, that early.

First non-drug PTSD treatment clears the FDA

Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy maps a person’s own EEG activity and then delivers transcranial magnetic stimulation tuned to it, five sessions a week for five to six weeks. Trials reported a 52% reduction in PTSD symptoms and a 68% remission rate, against a maximum of about 10.9% remission on SSRIs, with benefits persisting after treatment ended. This one is a cleared human device, not a mouse study.
